We are now ready to launch our Digital Volunteers in Studio 3! Thank you so much for the interest and willingness to make a difference in the lives of our learners. This is truly one of the most transformative experiences we have ever witnessed! Our Digital Volunteers provide students with an authentic audience that not only motivates and engages our students but allows their voice to be heard and opens the door for them to change our world, even as third graders!
Before we get started, we must mention the creator, visionary and leader of this concept, Tracey Kracht. Tracey is the Instructional Technology Coach for the Liberty Public School District. She has been, and will continue to be, our “partner in crime” on this year 2 blogging/DV journey! Click HERE to view incredible resources and information that Tracey uses to help others get started with this concept!
1st Steps: If you want to be a DV, we ask that this week you:
- Understand the basic Overview of Digital Volunteers (see below).
- Set up your account (see below).
- Explore a few of last year’s blog posts, especially the comments to begin getting an idea of what you will get to do (click HERE)!
DV (Digital Volunteers): Overview
Q) What are the main goals of a DV?
Connect with students, provide specific feedback (we will give you our “look-for’s” as well as sentence starters each time) and encouragement to help students grow as readers, writers, scientists, mathematicians, thinkers, etc.!
Q) Who can be a DV?
Any current Studio 3 parent or guardian.
Q) What are the commitments of a DV?
Read and comment to several students each week. We hope to keep your time commitment to 30 min. or less in any given week.
Setting Up Your DV Account
NOTE: If you have PREVIOUSLY been a Digital Volunteer within any KidBlog account, you already have your login info. Visit, https://kidblog.org/login . Login with your previous account details then add “Join” and use the code from your email.
Q) I want to be a DV! When can I join and set up my account? How do I do this?
A) You can do it right now! Studio 3 parents received an email recently that contains a link and “join code.” Please sign up by Saturday Sept. 12th, as we will make Comment Buddy groups on Sunday and send you the info. to get started with actual commenting next week!
Step 1: Go to this link: https://kidblog.org/class/epic-studio-3/posts
Step 2: You will see this image in the top left corner of your screen:
Step 3: Click, “Join.”
Step 4: You will see this image. Enter the code (this can be found in your email and is good thru Sept. 12th).
Step 5: You will then be prompted to set up your account. IMPORTANT: The “Name” you enter will be what shows up on your blog comments. You can change this later if needed.
Q) Should I use my last name when setting up my account?
A) Some parents prefer to use their first name so that last names cannot be matched up as people begin making connections to who their child might be as they are leaving comments. Thus, giving away the last name of a student.
Suggestion: use, “Ms. Kellie” or “Ms. K” instead of “Ms. Konrad”
*If there are names that end up being the same, we can easily make changes (with your permission).
Note: You will get a confirmation email if you sign up using Email.
Step 6: You will be taken to this page once you sign up. Click on the small orange url link.
Step 7: Go to the dropdown menu (top right corner) and choose, “My Profile.”
Step 8: You will see this screen. Click, “Choose Avatar” to change your avatar.
Q) Should I change my avatar to an image of my face?
A) We most definitely encourage you to change your avatar so that there is a professional (this is what we tell the kids) image of your face. This is a great way to model what kids will literally “face” the rest of their lives.
Step 9: Bookmark the following site, as it will be what you use to login from now on.
Congratulations and Thank You!
If you had any difficulties getting your account set up, please do not hesitate to contact us via email.
Next weekend you will receive information regarding getting started with comments!
